7 Places to Pitch and 7 Journalism Jobs to Apply for Right Now
Hello, travel writers,
Today I (Nina) had a writer/editor pitch herself for a job at T+L that doesn’t exist. She asked if I’d thought about hiring a dedicated freelance editor/correspondent for a particular tourism topic she’s an expert in (and pointed out that one of our competitors had created such a role). If that sounds bold to you, I get it. But while I had to tell her that I don’t have the budget to create that role right now, I respected the pitch. It was a good idea, and if we do open that type of role in the future, I’ll think of her. In the meantime, I encouraged her to pitch individual stories on the topic to my team.
This is just to say that you simply won’t land the story (or the role) you didn’t pitch. As long as it’s done thoughtfully, Stacey and I always encourage our students to put their big ideas out there. (And not to get discouraged by rejection!) Lately, that’s resulted in meetings with editors at major pubs, exciting press trip invites, and new published work in Nat Geo and more. So, if you’ve been sitting on an idea and questioning yourself, this is your sign to go for it. On that note, you can browse the opportunities we’ve sourced below (and, as always, you’ll find even more on our job board).

One Place We Love

I was actually overwhelmed by all the places I wanted to talk about here this week, so I’m going to start close to home. Over the weekend I took a lovely family day trip to Catalina Island, which I think is the perfect day trip from LA. (Never forget to be a tourist in your own backyard!) I’ve now gone there by helicopter, Sea-Doo, and ferry. This time was the ferry, which takes just over an hour from San Pedro, and it was such a nice, relaxing day exploring by golf cart and paddle board. It wasn’t a press trip, but shout out to the impressive publicist who saw that I went and was in my inbox first thing Monday morning inviting me to the 10th anniversary of the Catalina Wine Mixer (did you know they host one of those in real life??) See you there.
One Story We Love

Our students aren’t the only ones landing stories in Nat Geo — Stacey just fulfilled her dream of writing about cheese for them. Whether you love cheese or, like so much of Thailand, struggle with lactose, it’s a great read that will teach you something new and inspire your next trip (or, at the very least, your next snack).
See you in class,
Stacey & Nina
